Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opening batter Zak Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements made by skipper Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered this message in several conversations in the wake of his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes series versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I required," said the England leader.

But, after Crawley scored 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to England suffered a loss in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, he revealed his players had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley asserted the messaging from the captain and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we could do something special entering this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket on day four came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left England six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on the last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's drought in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes series loss.

This series is set to be decided in just 11 days of play – after England losing the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. Australia is a very, very good side. It was inevitably hard coming here to face them. They were the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his immediate place in the side, Pope appears under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on Saturday, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There is no chat like that regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley concluded.
