Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People using these treatments should be aware of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a return to original weight within about one and a half years.

Comparing Treatments

The research, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the jabs explains the amplified rebound.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Issue?

The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Users who have stopped the jabs report a powerful return of cravings.

"It was like something flipping and you become ravenous," said an individual.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Growing Use

Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is greater among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural changes.
